Soccer: LWC Men clinch MSC Regular Season Championship

By Kyle Jackson

The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team defeated No. 21-ranked Cumberland (TN) 4-1 today and cliched their 14th Mid-South Conference regular-season championship. It was the first time the Blue Raiders have won the regular season since 2017.

Alexander Koziolek had a game scoring two goals and notching an assist in the victory. The two goals and assist push the midfielder to six goals and eight assists on the season. Nathaniel Onyina Opoku scored his 12th goal of the season with Cyrus Harmon picking up his fourth assist of the year and Amin Fernouchi finished off the scoring for the Blue Raiders with his second of the season.

The Blue Raiders (10-2-1, 9-1 MSC) get back to winning ways in conference play as Cumberland (11-3-1, 7-2-1 MSC) see their six-game win streak in conference play snapped.

In a match where the regular-season championship was in grasp, the Blue Raiders entered the field of play on a mission as the first half began. Things got started off rather quickly as Martin Walsh forced Henrique Cavalini into an early opening minute save while at the other end David Ibrahimkadic saw a second-minute shot blocked.

Things calmed down minutes later but a major turning point in the match happened in the 30th minute as Opoku ran through onto goal 1v1 against Phoenix goalkeeper Nicklas Rulle. Opoku took his touch wide around the keeper on the edge of the box who then fouled the forward, denying him the opportunity on goal and seeing himself sent off in the process.

With the Phoenix down to 10 men for the remainder of the game, Koziolek took the free kick bending it low around the wall and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead and his fifth goal of the season.

Ten minutes later Koziolek picked up his brace and pushed the score to 2-0 after picking up the ball in the same spot as his free kick, firing a shot towards new goalkeeper Jacob Forster who got his hands to it but not enough as it fell into his net.

Four minutes later Opoku picked up his 12th goal of the season finishing off a cross from Harmon to make it 3-0 at the half.

The Phoenix clawed their way back into the game in the 55th minute as a combination of Tyler Watson and Martin Walsh found the goal to cut the Blue Raider lead to 3-1.

Fernouchi silenced the attempt at a comeback in the 67th minute, however, putting away his second goal of the season hitting a low shot near post he collected from a corner kick for the 4-1 victory.

The Blue Raiders will conclude the regular season and celebrate senior day on Thursday against rival (RV) Campbellsville University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pmCT.
