Joe C. Sparks, WWII veteran, retired Gradyville businessman, dies

The funeral service for Joe C. Sparks, 82, Columbia, KY, will be Sunday, April 17, 2005, at 1:00 p.m., at Grissom Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY, with Rev. William Davenport and Rev. Gerald Reliford officiating.

Mr. Sparks died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at 4:27 a.m., at the Westlake Regional Hospital.


He was a son of the late John Wes and Elva Hunter Sparks.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Air Force in England. He was a tail gunner on a B-24 fighter plane and received several medals.

Prior to his retirement, he operated a mill and feed store with other members of his family in Gradyville.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Columbia Lodge 96, and VFW Post 6097.

Survivors include the following:
  • One brother: W. A. Sparks, Columbia, KY

  • Four sisters: Norma "Butch" McCormick, Russellville, KY; Irene Love, Bowling Green, KY; Fay Campbell, Odin, IL; and Virginia Wonderling, LaCross, WI.

  • Several nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother: Marie Breeding, Mary Frances Petway, and James H. "Jiggs" Sparks.

Burial will be in Sparks Cemetery with military honors presented by VFW Post 6097.

Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Grissom Funeral Home.

Masonic Rites wil be conducted at 12:45 p.m., Sunday, April 17, by Columbia Lodge 96.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund.
