Columbia-Adair County C of C INSIGHTS April 2005: Redbud alert

Photo accompanies this story
The Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Association (SEKTDA) has issued a redbud alert for Adair County and twenty six surrounding counties for the month of April.

With spring, comes the blooming of the redbud trees in the Columbia-Adair County community. This blooming season there is more excitement as the SEKTDA will be giving 1000 free redbud trees to 27 various counties along scenic byways which includes Adair County.

The redbud trees were to be for individual citizens of the community to plant in areas of their choice to make a spectacular "blooming"show for the region.

The SEKTDA and its board members have declared April as Redbud Month across the Southern and Eastern Kentucky region. Adair County government officials affirmed this declaration by signing a Redbud Proclamation later in the month.

Within the launch of the Redbud Trails a program on May 10, 2004, Kentucky 5th District Congressman Hal Rogers' goal is to jump start the tourism season earlier for the region.

Due to the redbuds blooming approximately a month and a half prior to the traditional beginning of our tourism season, it is SEKTDAs intent with the planting of these beautiful trees along Southern and Eastern Kentuckys Scenic Byways, to draw tourists to the region earlier in the year extending the tourism season for a greater economic impact for the communities.

Counties along the Scenic Byways were given redbud tree seedlings with care and planting instructions. Planting will begin April 4th, and continue throughout the entire month. .

These seedlings will be given to the SEKTDA representative of the county and Mayor Pat R. Bell to organize where the planting will take place. On April 4, 2005, the trees were given away at the Chamber of Commerce in Columbia from 10:00 am until noon. Sue Stivers, SEKTDA Board Member for Adair County will be working with SEKTDA's National Scenic Byway Director, Jeff Crowe.

For more information contact Jeff Crowe at 606-677-6095 or at jcrowe@tourseky.comLast week, a few of the trees were still available at City Hall.
