Giles Foundation celebrates Janice Holt Giles' 100th birthday by Beverly England On March 20, 2005 the Janice Holt Giles and Henry Giles Foundation celebrated Janice Holt Giles 100th birthday with a tea at the Janice Holt Giles Memorial Regional Library, better known as the Adair County Public Library. Janice was born March 28, 1905. She later married a local boy from Knifley, Henry Giles. They met while traveling on a bus together he being in the Army serving in World II. They had a courtship by means of writing letters to one another. The day that Henry arrived back home from the war they were married. They then came back to Henrys home first living in Campbellsville, KY and then they made their home in Knifley, KY. Janice wrote her novels from the beautiful setting at Spouts Springs. Henry also wrote, but Janice was the main writer writing about her beloved home and people of Appalachian. The tea and reception at the Library was well attended by the community. We were very proud to have had Mr. Mike Hughes attend the two-day event. He traveled from Texas. Mike was assigned to do an English assignment on a Kentucky author. He chose Janice Holt Giles. After writing his paper they became close friends. She then invited the young man to come and visit her in Kentucky. Mike said that the experience was something that he still treasures to this day! The foundation presented Mrs. Irene Love from Bowling Green, Kentucky portraying Hannah Fowler based on the novel Hannah Fowler. Hannah Fowler was a woman that was captured by the Indians and returned to her family. Janice shows in the novel how strong of a character that this woman was and how she changed many lives of that day. Then on March 21st at the Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, KY the Foundation sponsored a day of Giles readings by several well-known Kentucky authors. Some of those authors included Dr. Wade Hall, Dr. David Carlson, Sally Ann Stricker, and Dr. Sarah Stafford, and there was a presentation of Shaker music. A luncheon was served and the event was concluded by a tour of the Janie Holt Giles and Henry Giles home in Knifley. Since this is the 100th year of Janices birth the Foundation is selling two items of interest. The Foundation is proud to be selling a paperweight that was done for the Foundation by local artist, Lloyd French. The paperweight has a drawing of the Giles cabin inside. Also, the foundation is selling a book entitled, Celebrating Janice. This book is a collection of papers that was presented at the Giles Symposium, held at Campbellsville University in May of 1991. The sales from both items will be used to restore the home of Janice. The items may be purchased at he Adair County Library and by contacting Beverly England at 270-384-5906 or by visiting the web page at www.gilessociety.org (There are many Giles stories in our database if you'd like to use the 'search' feature in the menu box at the top, left of this page.
