Photo, Mayor Bell, City Clerk Edwards, accompanies this article
Columbia Mayor Pat Bell signed the document proclaiming April 9-23 the 2005 City of Columbia PRIDE Spring Clean-up period, as the Coordinator for the event, City Clerk Carolyn Edwards, looked on.

Mayor Bell said that intensive media campaigns to involve people in the program are underway. "Mark (Chief of Police Mark Harris) and I have been on the radio trying to discourage littering. And Mark says we'll arrest you if we catch you littering, so I think it will have a good effect."

The Mayor said that the PRIDE organization is furnishing trash bags and gloves for the event, and that PRIDE founder, U.S. Representative Hal Rogers, is doing public service announcements on the radio which are localized to include Carolyn Edwards' name.

Mrs. Edwards a large number of organizations are involved. "There's the PRIDE group from the high school, Headstart, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, several church youth groups, the Chamber of Commerce, and many other organizations which are taking part."

She said that on April 23, many of the groups will be cleaning up designated areas.

Free trash pickup, with some restrictions of course, will be available during the period.

Mrs. Edwards' phone number at City Hall is 270 384-2501.
