Groups Join Forces to Ask Legislators: Is it Good for Kentuckys Kids? FRANKFORT, Ky. Tuesday is Children's Day at the capitol. Fifteen Kentucky child advocacy organizations are coming together in Frankfort on Tuesday, February 8 to urge legislators to invest in Kentuckys children when making budget decisions this session. Childrens advocates, parents, child care providers and educators will travel from across the state to meet with legislators and deliver Kentucky Childrens Dollars that pose the question, Is it Good for Kentuckys Kids? The symbolic dollars highlight the need for adequate funding of all childrens programs including the prevention of child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence, childrens health promotion, ensuring child safety on our roadways and trails, and ensuring accessible, quality early childhood services. In the morning, the participants will learn about the advocacy process, hear from experienced advocates, and hone their message for meetings with their legislators later in the day. The group will convene at the Capitol Rotunda at 11:15 for a brief welcome and remarks from invited legislators, Sen. Denise Harper-Angel, Rep. Tom Burch, and Rep. Jon Draud. They will later assemble on the steps up to the House and Senate chambers at 1:45 p.m. as legislators go into session to remind them about the importance of childrens programming in the state and to send the message that we need additional investments in children. Kentucky cannot afford to shortchange childrens needs, even when budgets are tight, said Paula Bendl Smith, executive director of the Kentucky Child Care Network. Investments in childrens early care and education, health and safety are the most important investments the Commonwealth can make. Groups participating in Childrens Day on February 8 include: Child Care Council of Kentucky, Children, Inc., Childrens Alliance, Community Coordinated Child Care, Community Partnership for Protecting Children, Eastern Kentucky Child Care Coalition, Injury Free Coalition for Kids-Lexington, Kentucky Child Care Network, Kentucky PTA, Kentucky Youth Advocates, Kentucky Institute for Family Literacy, Parent Voice, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, Safe Kids Coalition, and United Way of Kentucky.
