Velna Oakes, 80, dies December 3, 2004 Velna Oakes, 80, Allen Schoolhouse Rd, Columbia, KY, died Friday, December 3, 2004, at Fair Oaks Nursing Home, in Jamestown, KY. She was born in Russell County, KY, March 27, 1924, the daughter of the late John Wiley Chumbley and Ermine Roy Chumbley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oda Franklin Oakes.She is survived by the following:
Mrs. Oakes was a homemaker and a member of the Free Union Baptist Church. The funeral service was Sunday, December 5, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at Bernard Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jim Goff officiating. Burial was in Haven Hill Cemetery, Columbia, KY. Pallbearers were David Denton, Kenvie Reese, Chris McQueary, Michael Wright, Toby Thompson, and Joey Pollard. Bernard Funeral Home, Russell Springs, KY, was in charge of arrangements. This obituary was made possible through the support of Grissom Funeral Home, established in 1926, located one block off the square at 200 Campbellsville Street in Columbia.
