City Council holds first meeting of 2021

Columbia City Council held its first meeting of the new year Monday, January 3, 2021 via the Internet with all six Council members joining Mayor Pamela Hoots, City Attorney Derrick Helm, City Clerk Rhonda Loy, and Police Chief Jason Cross.

Robert Flowers was welcomed as the newly elected member taking the place of June Parson who retired at the end of the 2020 term. He joins returning Council Members Ronald Rogers, Sharon Payne, Craig Dean, Mark Harris and Linda Waggener.

Flowers commended Mayor Hoots on her leadership demonstrated by projects included in the State of the City report printed here last week. Normally this report is given at the first Chamber of Commerce meeting of each year, however that meeting was not held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Business of the meeting included application for a grant to develop the Burkesville Street City Park. The 17-acres which had been in the Hurt family for the last half century, per Mike Watson‘s history, just a few blocks from the historic public square, was purchased by the City last year.

Dreams for the property include a walking track to start as soon as possible, a dog park, possible restrooms, benches along the shaded property.
