Adair unemployment up slightly; still low at 3.7%

Adair County's unemployment rose .2 of one percent from September 4 to October 4, 2004, but remained very low, at 3.7%.

The employment picture for Adair County was good for second place in the seven-county area, as shown in this chart:

Metcalfe County's 2.7% rate was good for the third best unemployment rate in the state. Only Woodford County, with 2.5%, and Oldham County, with 2.6% were faring better.


Only 282 people were on the unemployment rolls during the period.

The Adair County rate is well below the statewide rate of 4.5% for the last reporting period, and was really strong when compared to the 5.1% national unemployment rate.

For Adair County, employment was 7,334 working, out of a civilian labor force of 7,616. The October 2004 figure of 3.7% is a remarkable turnaround from October 2003, when the state reported 11.1% employment for Adair County.

Unemployment down in 101 counties, up in 17, same in 2

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 30, 2004) - Unemployment rates decreased in 101Kentucky counties between October 2003 and October 2004, rose in 17 andremained the same in Livingston and Scott counties, according to theKentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet.

In October 2004, three counties had jobless rates at or above 10percent, and 10 counties recorded double-digit rates in October 2003.

Woodford County's 2.5 percent jobless rate was the lowest in thecommonwealth.

Other low rates were recorded in Oldham County, 2.6 percent;Metcalfe County, 2.7 percent; Menifee County, 2.8 percent; Anderson, Barren,Jessamine and Trigg counties, 2.9 percent each; and Fayette and Monroecounties, 3 percent each.

Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 12.9percent. It was followed by Elliott County, 12.7 percent; Carter County,10.3 percent; Lewis County, 9.3 percent; Morgan County, 8.3 percent; FultonCounty, 8.2 percent; Allen County, 7.9 percent; McCreary County, 7.8percent; Wolfe County, 7.6 percent; and Graves, Mason and Muhlenbergcounties, 7.3 percent each.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled tomeasure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian laborforce statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians whoare actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians whohave not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics inthis news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisonsbetween United States, state and counties figures.
