LWC Wrestling takes down No. 9 Marian and No. 10 Cumberland

The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team put on an impressive show this afternoon at Biggers Sports Center improving to 6-0 on the season with wins over two NAIA top-10 opponents.

The Blue Raiders defeated No. 9 Marian 31-20 before closing out the tri-dual with a 27-19 win over Cumberland. Lindsey Wilson managed wins in 12-of-20 matches, winning three by decision, one by major decision, three by technical falls and five via pins.

Marian won the opening 125-pound bout when Lindsey Wilsons Morgan Smith was pinned by Ty Haskins in the first period. Sam Bacon (No. 5 at 133) got the Blue Raiders on the board with a 7-4 decision over Trey McCartney (No. 14 at 133).

The Knights increased their advantage to 11-3 at 141-pounds when Blake Mulkey produced a technical fall over Tanner DeMien.

Lindsey Wilson was then able to string together three straight extra point victories with back-to-back pins and a technical fall. Trent Johnson (No. 3 at 149) pinned Seth Johnson in two minutes and 17 seconds as Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) followed suit, pinning Ismael Cornejo in 1:57.

Joe Koontz (No. 7 at 165) dominated his match against Elliot Rogers, winning on a 16-0 technical fall, to give the Blue Raiders a 20-11 lead.

The Blue Raiders would forfeit at 174-pounds as Trajan Hurd (No. 11 at 184) dropped a close 6-5 decision to Sam Osho (No. 7 at 184).

Tied at 20, the Blue Raiders won both of the remaining matches to secure the victory. Trevor Lawson (No. 2 at 197) picked up a technical fall against Austin Lane in 5:32 while Carlos Figueroa managed an upset pin victory over Ethan Bunce (No. 6 at HW).

The strong finish gave Lindsey Wilson the match 31-20.

Cumberland also jumped out to a quick lead in the Blue Raiders second match as Carter Cox pinned LWC's Smith in the 125-pound bout. Bacon shined once again, this time picking up 9-0 major decision Blaine Fussel. It marked the first of four straight wins for the Blue Raiders.

DeMien pinned Wesley Scott in 2:09 of the 141-pound match to give Lindsey Wilson a 10-6 advantage. Johnson then went to work against Anthony Maia (No. 6 at 149) and produced a 5-3 decision. Smallwood rolled in his match at 157-pounds picking up a huge 20-5 technical fall over Peyton Asbury.

Koontz fell in the 165-pound match on a 10-1 major decision as a forfeit by the Blue Raiders at 174-pounds pulled the Phoenix within two at an 18-16 LWC advantage. It was as close as Cumberland would get to regaining the lead.

Hurd battled to a 3-1 decision over John Olivieri before Lawson put the match away with a pin over River Henry (No. 17 at 197) to lead 27-16.

Figueroa almost managed his second upset of the day but ultimately fell on a 3-2 decision to Patrick Depiazza (No. 2 at HW) after being awarded a ride time point after three periods of action.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the mat on Dec. 13 when they travel to Waleska, Ga. to face Reinhardt (GA) and Southeastern (FL) at 9amCT.
