News from Africa LCDR Jeff Giles sent the following letter from Africa. ColumbiaMagazine sends special thanks to Jeff for his reports. I have almost completed half of my mission in Africa and it is hard to believe I have been here for three months now. The rainy season has ended here and it is now very hot, dry and dusty. We are staying very busy doing patrols daily in the temporary security zone. Both sides cannot seem to agree on the border so the mission has reached a critical stalemate. We are seeing the number of illegal border crossings and cattle rustling increase which makes our job even more difficult. I have now been named Team Leader of Team Site Badme. It is certainly an honor but also a very challenging job. Badme is at the height of the contraversy as it is where the war started and currently is the reason for the stalemate. The border commission gave Badme to Eritrea but Ethiopia has refused to vacate. Therefore we see a large troop buildup in the area from both countries. There are also many land mines here which makes the patrols even more hazardous. I have really enjoyed being able to keep up with the happenings in Columbia through Columbia Magazine online. It has helped me keep informed of my hometown. I really miss Columbia and everyone there. I look forward to the day when I return. Take care and Acuna Matada.
