Letter: Don't blame independent garbage collectors

By Joyce M. Coomer

I am tired of the independent garbage collectors getting blamed every time there is a sack of garbage in or near a road. I know what days they pick up on my road and the majority of the time when there is a sack of garbage lying around, it is NOT on the days that garbage has been picked up door-to-door.

People have a tendency to put things on top of cars (roof or trunk) and forget about them, put things in the beds of trucks and don't connect speed with air flow and things getting blown out . . . simple physics at work.

It's time to quit putting unnecessary blame on the independent garbage collectors. These people risk their lives daily simply by picking up other people's refuse. There could be a wide variety of harmful items, toxins and/or pathogens in household garbage. In this day and time, it would be a good idea for all garbage collectors to wear hazmat suits.
