Tutt Street rose extravaganza courtesy of Ruby Smith

By Linda Waggener

Ruby Smith and her husband Gene settled on Tutt Street in Columbia to raise their family and some 27 years ago she planted a rose bush by the front porch which is still thriving. Today, Passers by have to slow down and admire the "Climbing Red Blaze" rose bush that has grown to the height of her house and is covered with stunning blood-red blossoms.

"In the mornings," Ruby says, "I sit inside and look out the front window as the sun rises in the East and backlights this rose bush -- it's a breathtaking sight."

She insists she has given the plant no special treatment, no miracle fertilizer, merely trimmed it as it was needed. "I think the rose bush has grown so well is because it is just happy there," Ruby says, "protected on two sides by the house and the porch."

Her roses and the many other plants in her garden cause a lot of enjoyment for family and neighbors each spring. In addition, she says that whenever she gives people directions to her house, they often say, "Oh, you're the cactus lady!" They do that because her front yard is also home to a giant cactus plant -- not a very common sight in Adair County. Ruby says she fell in love with the cactus on a trip to New Mexico so a friend gave her a start of the plant. Over the years it has grown to shoulder height. The cactus must also be happy in Ruby's care, as healthy as it looks, and as large as it has grown from just a little sprout. She says it will have yellow blooms in the coming weeks.

Ruby has three grown children, Robin, Steve and Larry. If you'd like to ask her about her flower garden, you'll find her on the morning shift at ACE Hardware where she works.
