Adair County unemployment down slightly from year ago, previous month figures

Adair County's unemployment rate of 6.3% was down slightly in March, 2004, the latest month for which figures have been released.

This was down one-tenth of one percent from the February 2004 rate, and was down two-tenths of one percent from March 2004.


The figures are from a report issued by the Kentucky Department for Employment Services in the Education Cabinet.

The report showed that 7,138 of Adair County's civilian labor force of 7,616 were employed in March 2004; with 478 unemployed.

According to the report, Adair County's unemployment picture was still worse than that of the nation as a whole. The U.S. comparable rate for the period was 6.0%.

The local unemployment picture was even worse measured against the Kentucky average of 5.8% for the month.

In the seven county area including Adair and its neighbors, only Metcalfe County, with the state's second lowest rate, 3.1%, was better.

STATE'S REPORT FOR THE PERIOD:
FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 10, 2004) - Unemployment rates dropped in 92 Kentuckycounties between March 2003 and March 2004, rose in 24 and remained the samein Bracken, Laurel, Powell and Rowan counties, according to the KentuckyDepartment for Employment Services in the Education Cabinet.

In March 2004, 10 counties had jobless rates at or above 10 percent,and 23 counties recorded double-digit rates in March 2003.Woodford County's 2.7 percent jobless rate was the lowest in thecommonwealth. Other low rates were recorded in Metcalfe County, 3.1 percent; Franklin and Oldham counties, 3.3 percent each; Jessamine County, 3.4percent; Fayette and Shelby counties, 3.5 percent each; and Anderson, Henry and Marion counties, 4.1 percent each.

Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 17.1percent. It was followed by Lewis County, 13.8 percent; Carter and Elliottcounties, 12.8 percent each; Fulton County, 12.2 percent; Morgan County,10.9 percent; Ballard and Russell counties, 10.5 percent each; and Breathittand Powell counties, 10.1 percent each.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled tomeasure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian laborforce statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and counties figures.
