Celebrating Evan's life "This is the little one we all prayed so hard for last summer..." -Rev. Don Young, Advance Memorial UMC Evan Smith Waggener, age 10 months, was christened on Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004 at Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods, Kentucky where his parents were married eleven years ago and where his big brother was christened two and a half years ago. Evan's mother Amy said, "Easter is the perfect day to christen Evan because he was, indeed, re-born". After coming into this world not breathing on June 14, 2003, the baby was thankfully resuscitated by the delivery team. Once able to breathe, however, doctors discovered additional problems and he was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where for two gruelling weeks he was on life support, undergoing and recovering from emergency surgery. Family, friends and church members prayed for Evan's life. His first trip home two weeks after his birth, and every day since then with his family, has been another day for celebrating life. That made this Easter christening event an even more joyous occasion. Rev. Don Young took Evan in his arms and introduced him to the congregation, and reminded them, "This is the little one we all prayed so hard for back in June." As if he completely understood, Evan smiled to the congregation and clapped his chubby hands. Surrounding him at the alter for the ceremony were Evan's parents, Edmund Pendleton "Pen" Waggener and Amy Elizabeth Smith Waggener, and big brother Jonathan Graham Waggener; grandparents Ken and Kay Smith of Russell, Kentucky and Ed and Linda Marcum Waggener of Columbia; Great-grandmothers Avalee Conlon of Flatwoods, Kentucky and Geniece Marcum of Edmonton. Also standing at the altar in support of his first cousins was William Segal White who travelled there with his Grandmother Marcum. Family members Aunt Margaret Ann Conlon and Aunt Nickie Smith, both of Flatwoods, were in the congregation. A celebration dinner was prepared by Great-grandmother "Granny" Conlon and served in her Flatwoods home after the church service. On her menu were honey baked ham, turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn, plus other vegetables and salads. Her special yeast rolls disappeared quickly. Desserts included homemade red velvet cake, angel food cake and coconut pie. Family friends who helped with and joined in at lunch included Irene Fisher and her daughter Janice Butler and David Hall and his son Brett. Evan, Graham and Will enjoyed a grand Easter egg hunt after lunch. This story was posted on 2004-04-15 10:07:12
