Baby Boomers becoming Baby Zoomers By Linda Waggener It's interesting to be part of the community necessarily learning how to use Zoom meetings in this time of the Coronavirus requiring cancellations of all things congregational. From church services to public meetings to family visits, all ages are taking to the internet to keep communications going. The Columbia City Council held its first online ZoomUS.com meeting this month under the guidance of our public schools Technology Network Administrator Jason Rector. A few council members are in the Baby Boomer generation and at these ages, we have now graduated to become "Baby Zoomers". Things we're learning about meeting over the internet ... ... Requirements include having some tech equipment which most have in homes or pockets, learning a new process, having a coach, and being coachable. ... Have light in front of us, not behind us. ... Attend to the background - not a window due to the light being behind and not in front, as mentioned above. One council member came into the meeting with the US flag in the background. Everyone admired it and asked for how-to instructions. Mark Harris later shared that anyone can google Zoom backgrounds and put them on your phone in Zoom settings. ... Mute the microphone until time for your voice contribution to keep down interference and background noises. Council member Craig Dean said that headphones help keep out background noise. Seems if two people are near each other, both on live mic (not headphones) at the same meeting, screeching whistle noises occur. ... My second grader grandchild is Zooming school during this pandemic and advised that the background option doesn't work if you are using a computer, special backgrounds are only available on Zoom on a smart phone. ... Last lesson for now, set the screen up so you look straight at it lest there's the effect of looking down one's nose at viewers. Our special called City Council meeting of May 2020 was held Friday, the 8th, at 11:30amCT on Zoom, a first in the history of the Council. This story was posted on 2020-05-12 07:57:36
