Robert Spires, 85, World War II veteran

Robert P. Spires, 85, 2945 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY (the Garlin Community), passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at 9:55 p.m., at Westlake Regional Hospital.

The funeral service is Saturday, February 7, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia, KY, with Brother Raymond Martin officiating.


Mr. Spires was a member of the Columbia Christian Church and a retired farmer. At the time of his death he was co-owner, with his wife of the Country Corner Store in the Garlin Community on Liberty Road, a business they had owned for 19 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was the son of the late Ancil Harrison and Martha Elizabeth Mings Spires. He was born on July 17, 1918, at Spout Springs in Adair County.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Knifley Spires.

He is also survived by the following:
  • One son: Robert W. Spires and his wife, Susan, Murfreesboro, TN
  • Three daughters: Gayle Blair, Columbia, and was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, on January 30, 2001; Nancy Norris and her husband Bailey , Bowling Green, KY; and Carla Hargus and her husband, Jeff, Lexington, KY
  • Two brothers: Joe Spires, Edmonton, KY; and Junior B. Spires, Columbia, KY
  • Three sisters: Imogene Giles, Knifley, KY; and Beatrice Phipps and Frances Hancock, both of Kokomo, IN
  • Eight grandchildren, three great granchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister: Ivan Spires, Clifton Spires, William Spires, and Lillian Burton.

Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is after 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 6, 2004, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia, KY.
