Making emergency plan, good at-home school work

Reporting the emergency siren test this morning reminds us that this is a good time of year to check supplies and make a plan for just-in-case. This might be good at-home-homework for students with the added benefit that the perfect emergency plan would include the whole family.

Kentucky's health website includes how to create a plan in case your family may not be together if a disaster like a tornado (usually the top concern in this season in this area) strikes. Below are the recommended steps to take to complete this "homework."

Step 1: Put together a plan by discussing these 4 questions with members of the household to start your emergency plan.
- How will we get emergency alerts and warnings?
- What's our shelter plan?
- What's our evacuation route?
- What is our family/household communication plan?

Step 2: What are the specific needs in our household.

Clicking this link provides a printable form making it simple to help check off the items needed.

Plan for specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets, or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance. Keep in mind some of these factors when developing your plan:
- Different ages of members within your household
- Responsibilities for assisting others
- Locations frequented
- Dietary needs
- Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
- Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment, etc.
