Taking the Culture Shock Workshop on the Road

By Sabine Eastham

The International Student Programs took their "Culture Shock" Workshop on the road and presented it to the Intercultural Communication Class at LWC. Students learned about the different stages of "Culture Shock" and what one can do to overcome it Watching a brief video about the "Iceberg Model" helped students understand that we cannot judge a new culture based only on what we see when we first enter it. We must take the time to get to know individuals from that culture and interact with them. We need to change the lenses of our cultural glasses, and then we can benefit from Diversity.

Students in the "Intercultural Communication Class" applied the Basics of Interpersonal Communication (Engagement, Activity and Management) during the fun exercise of" Brain Dating". An activity in which students were encouraged to meet and mingle with one another in under 5 minutes before moving on to mingle with a different person.
