Deep shooting lifts LWC Men to 80-75 road win

By Brady Budke

Portsmouth, OH - The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team defeated Shawnee State (Ohio) 80-75 on Saturday evening at the Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Blue Raiders play was elevated by 15-of-33 shooting from behind the arc.

Reece Brooks led the scoring with 26 points, including a 6-of-9 mark from deep and an 8-of-17 mark from the field. Payton Cundiff cashed in five three-pointers, while tallying 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Kameron Mack drilled four three-pointers while also pulling in 22 points on 9-of-19 shooting. EJ Onu and Tim Biakapia each led the Bears with 18 points.

The Blue Raiders shot 43.8% from the floor connecting on 28-of-64 attempts. Shawnee State hit 26-of-67 attempts for 38.8%. The Bears won the rebounding battle by 20 despite falling in the game.

The game began with Lindsey Wilson firing from behind the three-point line at will and connecting on four early ones to take a 16-9 lead at the first called Shawnee State timeout. SSU would quickly call another timeout a short time later after a Brooks steal and jumper on the other end pushed the early lead to nine.

The Blue Raiders continued to score the ball at a high level as the first half hit the midway point, with Mack drilling a three-pointer with 8:27 remaining to push the lead to 27-15. Turnovers would prove to hurt the Bears first half efforts, with eight coming in the first 15 minutes of action trailing 32-17 in front of the home crowd. Three-point shooting remained the name of the game for Lindsey Wilson, as back-to-back possessions resulted in Cundiff cashing in three-pointers, forcing another Bears timeout with the score at 44-21. SSU ended the half on a 5-0 run, but trailed LWC by a score of 44-26 going into the locker room.

Lindsey Wilson went 10-of-23 from behind the arc in the first half, with Cundiff and Brooks each tallying four three-pointers apiece. Cundiff led the scoring with 16 points, Brooks trailed right behind with 14, and Mack also hit double-figures with 12 points. Shawnee State shot just 31.2% from the field in the first half, with EJ Onu leading the way with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The second half of basketball began no differently for the Blue Raiders, as the hot three-point shooting continued to play into the game plan. Brooks would send home two more early half three-pointers to spread the lead out to 52-34 with just over 15 minutes remaining. The Bears remained unable to make up any early second half ground, trailing by 17 with 10:30 remaining.

Aware that time was ticking away, SSU began to turn up the heat. Strong play on both ends of the floor led to Shawnee State's Kyree Elder making two free throws at 7:15 on the clock to cut the lead to single digits. However, Lindsey Wilson would quickly answer the call on the other end with another made three-pointer by Mack to extend the lead back to double-digits. The Bears would again make the game back within arm's reach, as Biakapia trimmed the Lindsey Wilson lead to just five with two free throws. Selby Hind-Wills drilled an elbow jumper for Shawnee State with 2:23 remaining to trim LWC's lead to just two.

Both teams continued to fight back-and-forth in the final minute. Justin Johnson would go 1-for-2 from the charity stripe for SSU with 13.5 seconds remaining to trim the Lindsey Wilson lead to just one. However, Brooks would answer on the other end with two clutch free throws, and a costly Shawnee State turnover would ultimately end with Edwards cashing in two more free throws for LWC to secure the 80-75 road victory.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15, traveling to Campbellsville (Ky.) to take on the Tigers in the Battle of Highway 55. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT.
