Students Fields, Miller and Smith will be heading for Japan

TCHS participants to "build a solid understanding of US-Japan relations at the local level and have the necessary knowledge and connections to appreciate the benefits of the strong relationship we share between the United States and Japan."

By Maddie Gumm

Three Taylor County High School seniors will visit Japan this spring as part of a JASK (Japan/America Society of Kentucky) scholarship and travel opportunity. Rhiannon Fields, Hunter Miller, and Raechel Smith will attend a week-long trip to engage and participate in the Japanese language and culture. The Japan Foundation will cover the following expenses for the students' airfare, hotel, meals, group travel expenses, admission fees for planned events, and overseas travel insurance.

According to the JASK website, "this program is organized in conjunction with the Grassroots Exchange Network - Japan (GEN-J) with the purpose of deepening understanding about Japan and Japanese-language on the grassroots level in Southern and Midwestern states that normally have limited opportunities for cultural exchange with Japan." During the trip, the students will visit a major city in Japan, participate in exchanges, visit one of Kentucky's Sister Cities, participate in a company tour, eat authentic Japanese food and experience the culture.

The TCHS students applied for this opportunity in November 2019 through an online application and interview process. The goal of the program is for participants to "build a solid understanding of US-Japan relations at the local level and have the necessary knowledge and connections to appreciate the benefits of the strong relationship we share between the United States and Japan."
