LWC Men's Basketball upsets No. 4 Pikeville 80-69

The No. 19-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team upset No. 4-ranked Pikeville (Ky.) 80-69 in a Mid-South Conference matchup Saturday at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (13-6, 2-3 MSC) had four players record double figures led by Reece Brooks who matched his career-high in points with 28. Kel Stotts scored 12 points in the game while Malik Hart and Matthew Eldridge scored 11 and 10, respectively.

Lindsey Wilson outshot the Bears (15-3, 3-3 MSC) 59.2 percent to 49.1 percent. The Blue Raiders connected on 13 of their 22 attempts from beyond the arc.



Pikeville jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Malik Hart got the Blue Raiders on the board with a three. After the Bears took a 9-5 lead with 17:18 left in the first half, Lindsey Wilson scored eight of the next 10 points to lead 13-11with 15:18 to play in the half. The Blue Raiders took a 23-18 lead with nine minutes to play in the half before Pikeville went on a quick 7-0 run to lead 25-23.

Lindsey Wilson answered back with a 5-0 run to regain the lead 28-25 with 6:43 left in the half. The Bears responded with a run of their own scoring 11 of the next 13 points to lead 36-30 with under two minutes to play in the half. The Blue Raiders went into halftime trailing 38-33.

The Blue Raiders shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half while the Bears shot 57.1 percent. Lindsey Wilson also connected on 6-of11 shots from beyond the arc in the half. Brooks led the Blue Raiders with 10 points at the half while Eldridge and Stotts each had six.

Pikeville got off to a fast start in the second half as they scored eight of the first 10 points to increase its lead to 46-35. The Blue Raiders then trimmed the deficit to 46-41 with 15:01 remaining in the half as they went on a 6-0 run. After a Bear three made it 49-41, Lindsey Wilson scored nine of the next 10 points to tie the game at 50 with 12:07 to play.

The two teams traded baskets before Stotts hit a three to give Lindsey Wilson a 55-52 lead with 9:53 left in the game. After a Pikeville basket cut the lead to 55-54, the Blue Raiders went on a 10-2 run to increase their lead to 65-56 with 6:18 left in the second half. After Pikeville trimmed the Lindsey Wilson lead to 67-60, the Blue Raiders scored six quick points increasing their lead to 73-60 with over three minutes to play. The two teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way as Lindsey Wilson came away with the 80-69 victory.

Pikeville had four players in double figures led by Korbin Spencer who scored a team-high 16 points. Jordan Perry added 14 points for the Bears, JJ Ramey had 13 and Da'Rell Domineck scored 10.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday, January 18 at 4pmCT for an MSC matchup with (RV) Cumberlands at Biggers Sports Center.
