LWC Wrestling posts a 2-1 record at NAIA National Duals

By Christopher Coombs

Louisville, KY - The No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson Wrestling team finished the first day of competition at the NAIA National Duals with a 2-1 record. All three of LWC's duals came down to the final bout against some of the top competition the NAIA has to offer.

The Blue Raiders picked up wins over No. 16 Missouri Valley (22-19) and No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) (22-19). Lindsey Wilson would drop their first dual of the season to No. 6 Baker on a close 22-20 result.

No. 7 Lindsey Wilson 22 | No. 16 Missouri Valley 19
The Blue Raiders' first match of the tournament came down to the final bout as LWC and Missouri Valley were deadlocked at 19 points. Brandon Reed (No. 1 at Heavyweight) managed to seal the win with a 7-0 decision over Joshua Isaac to give LWC a 22-19 victory.

Lindsey Wilson opened the contest with back-to-back decision wins as Cagen Wallace (No. 13 at 125) downed Blake Mills on a 13-6 score. Brock Whorton then managed a 12-7 decision over Dequarius Millett.

The Vikings responded with back-to-back wins of their own, taking a 7-6 lead in the match. Sam Bacon lost to Zachary Durbin on an 8-0 major decision and Austin Ramsey lost a close 4-2 decision to Casper Sherow (No. 9 at 149).

Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) regained the lead for the Blue Raiders momentarily with a 6-3 decision over Richard Pocock.

Missouri Valley then recorded back-to-back pin victories as Joe Koontz fell to Elias Vaoifi (No. 5 at 165) and Austin Deffenbaugh fell to William Seibert (No. 18 at 174).

Lindsey Wilson needed three straight victories to close out the match with their first win of the tournament as they trailed 19-9 entering the 184-pound bout. Trevor Lawson (No. 5 at 184) got the Blue Raiders back in the win column with a 9-0 major decision over Tyler Crow. Avery Buckman (No. 20 at 197) leveled the score at 19 when he pinned Dayton Brown (No. 13 at 197) in 5:20 for the nationally ranked upset.

The No. 1-ranked heavyweight in the country Brandon Reed then did the rest as the Blue Raiders defeated Missouri Valley 22-19.

No. 7 Lindsey Wilson 20 | No. 6 Baker 22
Lindsey Wilson dropped their first dual of the season at the hands of No. 6 Baker. Both squads picked up five match victories but two Baker pins proved to be the difference-maker.

Brock Whorton defeated Zane Baugh on a 6-1 decision at 133-pound to level the score at three. Two straight wins by the Wildcats, a pin and a decision gave Baker a 12-3 advantage.

Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) pinned Chance Sullivan 40 second into the second period of his match as Joe Koontz then downed Gabe Hodge on a commanding 16-0 technical fall to push LWC to a 14-12 lead, their last lead of the match.

Lucas Lovvorn (No. 1 at 174) put Baker ahead for good with his pin at 174-pounds as the Wildcats took an 18-14 lead.

Trevor Lawson (No. 5 at 184) managed a close 2-0 decision victory over Jacob Smith (No. 3 at 184). LWC trailing by just one point would lose on a major decision at 197 pounds before Brandon Reed once again tried to play the hero. The top-rated heavyweight pulled out his second win of the day, a 9-7 decision victory over Jake Miller but Baker had secured enough points to claim the victory at 22-20.

No. 6 Lindsey Wilson 22 | No. 4 Cumberlands 19
Cagen Wallace (No. 13 at 125) opened the dual with a pin victory over Marcus Kidwell in just 2:21 of the first period. Cumberlands would then win four straight matches -- three by decision and one via pin - to take a 15-6 lead at the halfway point.

Zane Brown quickly trimmed the Patriot advantage when he pinned Charlie Friedenreich in 2:42 of the first period. Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) picked up the Blue Raiders' third extra point-win of the match when he took down Jacob McNutt (No. 6 at 165) on a commanding 17-6 major decision victory. Smallwood wrestled up two weight classes at 174-pounds.

Trevor Lawson (No. 5 at 184) then defeated Max Emerson on a 5-0 decision to give LWC a 19-15 lead with two bouts remaining.

Cumberlands managed to level the score at 19 at 197-pounds with a major decision win. Brandon Reed (No. 1 at HW) closed out his second tied match of the day when he defeated Aaron Johnson (No. 11 at HW) on a 5-2 decision.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the mat tomorrow morning for day two of the NAIA National Duals. The Blue Raiders are set to square off with No. 12 Providence (Mont.) at 8 a.m. CT.
