Cancer specialist speaks on danger of Radon gas

Wynona Padgett, the Lake Cumberland Regional Cancer Control Specialist for the ten-county area, brought attention to cancer-causing Radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Radon, a radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium, thorium, or radium, break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. People get exposed to radon from breathing radon in air that comes through cracks and gaps in homes and buildings.

Padgett is part of the UK Markey Cancer program. She will be speaking at a spring Chamber of Commerce meeting and will have a few free Radon test kits to hand out to any who may want to test their homes.

Training offered on Self Care for health and education workers

At this month's meeting, extra time was made available for Self Care training by guest speaker Dr. Joseph Bargione from Louisville. His work is dedicated to building resilient children and families.

The objectives of his presentation to education and healthcare workers included discussion of a trauma-informed organization system, secondary trauma and compassion fatigue and how they impact the ability to serve children and families.

It concluded in a review and drafting of a self care plan so that staff is able to reach the goal, "be my best to do my best."
