Adair ranks high in area population, low in retail sales

A look at information gathered from the U.S. Census Bureau's website shows Adair County is doing relatively well in population figures, but is not faring as well in retail sales.

In population in the seven-county area which includes Adair and surrounding counties, Adair is second to Taylor County, the most populous.

But in retail sales, Adair County has less than one-third the annual sales of Taylor County, and also trails neighboring Russell County.

The figures for county population and retail sales, derived from the 2000 census, for the seven counties follows:

POPULATION RANKINGS
  1. Taylor County 22,927
  2. Adair County 17,244
  3. Russell County 16,315
  4. Casey County 15,447
  5. Green County 11,518
  6. Metcalfe County 10,037
  7. Cumberland County 7,147
RETAIL SALES RANKINGS ($1,000s)
  1. Taylor County $252,849
  2. Russell County $104,919
  3. Adair County $83,024
  4. Casey County $44,217
  5. Metcalfe County $39,769
  6. Cumberland County $35,091
  7. Green County 33,386
Retail sales do not include services.

COMMENT
It would appear that the third place showing for Adair County is bolstered by high automotive and restaurant sales in the county.

On the other hand, there would appear to be relative declines in ready-to-wear and grocery sales.
