Adair Co. Library campus will grow in 2020

By Lee Ann Jessee

WATCH US GROW IN 2020!! It's not just about the building, it's about building community. The Adair County Public Library Board of Trustees is happy to announce that the library campus will be expanding beginning in 2020.

After years of discussing and planning, the Board of Trustees will be building a new genealogy and local history department adjacent to the current Adair County Public Library. This new building will house all of the genealogy materials and local history materials that pertain to genealogy.

The library was happy to add Phil Hanna (former LWC library director) and Michael Watson (premier Kentucky genealogist and historian) to the current staff earlier this summer. Both these individuals are well versed and known for their experience in genealogy, local, state and world history. They have been working diligently with the library's genealogy director, Ernestine Bennett, to prepare items for their new home. They have also been researching families and digging for info for researchers that have been in this summer.

Some may ask, "why build a building for this?" Well, the answer is in the numbers, so to speak. Each year the Adair County Public Library Genealogy Department sees travelers from all over the United States enter the doors. The genealogy department has also seen people from Australia, Canada, England and Germany just to name a few. According to USA Today, genealogy is currently the second most popular hobby in the United States, topped only by gardening.

The Adair County Public Library is also committed to preserving our rich Adair County history and heritage. There are many people who have dedicated their life to precise and documented family research. Unfortunately, there are times when this information has no home. This new department will provide a place for that research.

The Adair County Public Library Staff and Board of Trustees invite you to go with us on this building project and watch as we build community along with a building.
