ACES to hold election for minority SBDM representative

By Teresa Absher
Adair County Elementary School Guidance Counselor

Adair County Elementary is writing this letter to inform you of the fact that our minority student population stands at 9.9% as of September 16. According to KRS 160.345, school councils in schools having 8% or more minority students shall have at least one minority school representative on the Site Based Decision Making Council.

We are very excited about this opportunity to ensure that our SBDM Council is strengthened. We feel that this opportunity only stands to enhance our decision making at ACES.

We will be taking nominations for our Minority Representative from now until November 1st. You may contact Mrs. Absher, ACES Guidance Counselor, at school or by phone at 270-384-0077.

The Minority SBDM Representative Election will be held on November 11, 2019, at ACES. You may vote for your selection in our front office/lobby area from 1pmCT until 7pmCT.

For clarity purposes, we have listed the definition of "Minority" below according to KRS 160.345:
160.345 Definitions -- Required adoption of school councils for school-based decision making -- Composition -- Responsibilities -- Professional development -- Exemption -- Formula for allocation of school district funds -- Intentionally engaging in conduct detrimental to school-based decision making by board member, superintendent, district employee, or school council member -- Complaint procedure -- Disciplinary action -- Rescission of right to establish and powers of council -- Wellness policy.

(a) "Minority" means American Indian; Alaskan native; African-American; Hispanic, including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central or South American origin; Pacific islander; or other ethnic group underrepresented in the school
