Letter: My experience with vaping

Joyce Coomer writes:

My experience with vaping or the use of e-cigarettes, whatever it is called this week . . .

While I don't smoke, have never smoked, and consider it a rather useless habit, I tolerate others' smoking habits unless the smoke is bothering my lungs. (I have had asthma and several allergies all my life.)

Two or three years ago, one of our customers came in and was smoking an e-cigarette. She asked if I minded and I told her to go ahead. We talked for an hour or so and I didn't have any noticeable effects other than a mild dislike for the smell of the fumes.

That night, I woke up with a severe coughing spell. I did this two or three times that night, and several times the next day. Everything I coughed up was bitter as could be and my chest felt tight for a few days.

I told her about it and she's gone back to regular cigarettes.

While I know that smoking tobacco products isn't good for your health, I have never considered tobacco to be as harmful as the e-cigarettes. I would advise people to stay away from them . . . and also tobacco products, whether smoking or chewing. However, if people want to smoke or chew tobacco, that is their choice and I don't say anything unless either is bothering me at the moment. -- Joyce
