Letter: CDC advice on vaping

Jessica writes:
The CDC and fda have found it is black market THC cartridges causing the issue. They have even warned ppl not to use these cartridges. There is cyanide and vitamin E acetate in them. Normal vapes have vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and flavouring. Which are food additives. There is also different percentages of nicotine you can get in them if you even want it. This getting old with the scare mongering against normal vapes. Every media outlet I've seen wants to conveniently omit the actual cause of this. I'm sorry, but every one of these reports rub me the wrong way b/c it's just demonizing normal vaping. And banning vapes aren't going to solve a problem when what's causing it is illegal to start with. --Jessica
Comments re article 106654 DPH More reported cases of severe lung injury from vaping

Jessica, Thanks for writing. Those "black market THC" cartridges are notably hazardous, but the CDC currently says that "no single product or substance has been linked to all lung injury cases." The article you commented on specifically mentions "a man in his early thirties who reported vaping with nicotine, and no THC or synthetic cannabinoid."

While they study the problem, the CDC isn't proposing a ban. Their advice is quite a bit more reasonable: "While this investigation is ongoing, CDC recommends that you consider refraining from using e-cigarette, or vaping, products, particularly those containing THC."

The idea of "normal" vaping is problematic. Since vapes are so new, health care research will likely be playing catchup for decades. Sixty years ago, smoking cigarettes was completely "normal." It took a couple of generations for public awareness to catch up with health officials' growing knowledge of the nasty health problems that smoking was causing. The long-term effects of vaping simply can't be known yet. In the meantime, we think informed caution is good advice. --Pen
