How Big Windy got its name By Jeff Johnson My late grandfather, Noah "Jack " Scott, (1906-1998), told me the "Big Windy " location was on the straightaway on 61 North that started around Bethany Baptist Church and ended before 'dead man's curve' that was bypassed in the early 1990's. He stated that spirits were consumed freely and all aspects of life were discussed. Disagreements occured and violence ensued. Hence the name 'Big Windy' for all the boastful talk and violence. In correlation to the original story of chicken thievery, I remembered an anecdote he told me of the of the dire times of the Great Depression. He said if a person took something of another in the dark of the night, it was considered stealing; however, if it was done in the light of day, it was considered "borrowing." I know this story did not pertain to his nature. He was honest, kept his word and toiled 6 days a week--mostly farming--for most of his life. I guess he respected the people of Glensfork because of the way they had to eke out a living in "Hardscratch." This story was posted on 2019-10-05 07:50:43
