Perryville Commemoration scaled back due to dry conditions

By Gil Lawson

Perryville, KY - Due to abnormally dry weather conditions causing burn bans across the state, the events for the Battle of Perryville Commemoration Oct. 5-6 will be greatly scaled back, the Department of Parks announced today.

All camping, military demonstrations with cannons and other special programming have been cancelled for Saturday and Sunday. Boyle County, where the park is located, is among more than 100 counties that have burn bans in effect.

Perryville is the site of the largest Civil War battle in Kentucky that occurred in October, 1862. Each year, the battle is commemorated with special events during the first weekend in October.

Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site will remain open for the weekend. A memorial service planned for noon on Saturday and paranormal tours set for Saturday evening will continue as scheduled. The park museum and grounds will remain open with regular admission prices.

"We are disappointed to have to make these changes, but in the interest of the safety for our guests, neighbors and our staff, we did not have any other choice," State Parks Commissioner Donnie Holland said.
