Letter: Two ee's in Fee

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
This is a great photo Linda, but according to the church sign, the name is spelled Fee - two ee's and I think that is to honor John G. Fee, an abolitionist, educator and minister. He deserves to be remembered! Whoever built the church and named it, I think, meant for Fee to be remembered, and Fe does not do that. One of his accomplishments was educating black soldiers and their families at Camp Nelson during the Civil War where many of the soldiers were from central Kentucky. That's how I think people who named the church knew about Fee (soldiers passed along the stories) and the many ways Fee worked to do away with slavery. I think Fee's belief of equality for all people was passed down to those who built the church and chose Fee's name to honor him.

Fee also founded Berea College to be an integrated coeducational school. For all he did, I think, people who built the church considered him a "saint" (santa) - even though this is a Baptist Church.

Why do we seem to think the people who built the church sign did not know correct spelling and we need to change it? Maybe those people thought that surely people would remember John Fee. --Vonnie
