Volunteers needed by Band of Brothers 21 Sept 2019 In the spirit of an old fashioned barn raising, the Columbia Christian Church Band of Brothers is asking for volunteers to help in a day of service Saturday, September 21, 2019 in the Flatwoods of Adair County. The only remaining Rosenwald School is in serious need of repairs to maintain the building for the public to enjoy. The survey of the school, August 3, 2019, resulted in the Columbia Christian Church Band of Brothers committing to help with technical direction & special tools to begin restoration of the school. "All people are invited to come one, come all," Morrison says. The mission work day will begin at 7amCt and continue until ? Directions to Rosenwald School Flatwoods: Hwy 61 South 1.3 miles past parkway overpass, turn left on Wheeler Hill Road. Go 0.9 miles (Old Hwy 61) Santa Fee Baptist Church and the School is on right near the intersection of Jones Chapel Road and Wheeler Hill Road. The list of work needed at the School includes: 1. Laminate all photos on wall. 2. Laminate writeup on building. 3. Find/build window to replace. (possibly look at Harmony School). 4. Window seals can be scrapped, sealed, primed, painted. 5. Floor in good shape (needs cleaning). 6. Entry door repaired or replaced. Possibly cut out section/replace. 7. Roof needs going over/nailing or screwingdown. Also needs painting, Probable Aluminum paint, 8. Benches need cleaning. (If sealed, could lose some historic value). 9. Ceilings fairly good. Few water spots. Tiles may have tongue and groove above it. Check out and decide direction to take. 10. Foundation seems good, maybe need to check support piers. 11. Interior doors good. Need to find old knobs for replacing. 12. May want to remove paneling around chimney. 13. Blackboard peeling. Don't think would recommend changing, shows evolution from true blackboards to painting them green during 1950's-1060. 14. Entry porch. One board at junction of ramp and porch under post need replacing, three holes on outer edge need replacing back to other joist, outside ends of planks saw toothed but show historic value (maybe put under joist on inside co outside joist to assure support & safety. 15. Entrance ramp (except narrow board)structurally okay. Pressure wash, paint and/or stain. 16.Ship lap siding on West end and back need some replacing, approximately 15-25 pieces(possibly get from some from old falling downfarm homes) 17. All siding needs scraping, primer and painted. Might be able to pressure wash most off. Would need to coordinate with church for water and electric access. 18. Remove screens of windows, scrape, putty & paint. Replace screens to protect windows glass, put flat strips over laps. 19. Trim tree limbs back from over building. 20. Checkout electrical supply system and wiring. There is an electric feed running to school but not sure if is from church or not. 21. Clean and cover historic marker to prevent more damage. 22. Need Historic marker on Hwy 61 near road. Need community to participate. 23. Check and touch up seal around chimney. 24. Probable set up stove and other items to show how it was in 50-60's. Usually with 'Band of Brothers' projects we arrange to have lunch for the workers. Santa Fe Church could use help providing lunch for the workers. This story was posted on 2019-09-09 09:16:15
