Generator, Pyles' donation, blacktopping at City Council

Additional Topics from the Regular September 2019 Meeting
- Joe Pyles donation will allow space for kayak put in, Russell Creek
- City is now the official Trail Town contact in Adair County

By Tiffany Kessler

Donald Hare came before the council requesting the purchase of a generator which will be installed at the Lindsey Wilson College campus water tower.

Hare explained the predicament, "I don't know what's going on with Lindsey Wilson's grid but we've have four or five power outages this year. Essentially the fire department and the police department go to battery backup so there's only about an hour before the batteries go dead."

Mayor Hoots made sure the council understood the issue created a lack of communication, "You're doing this because you do not want to lose any emergency calls and some have been dropped so this is why you're requesting it."

With a cost of $6,450, Hare broke down the financials of the project - the city police would pay half of the total allowing the city and county fire departments to each pay a fourth.

The project received a unanimous vote from the council.

Additional Items Discussed

* A letter from the Kentucky Department of Travel and Tourism stated that the City of Columbia is now the official contact for the Columbia Trail Town Task Force. It was also mentioned during the meeting that Joe Pyles has offered to donate an area (up Hwy 206, to the right before you cross the bridge). This would allow space for kayaks to be put in Russell Creek. The council was grateful and it passed unanimously.

* The blacktopping list for fall includes: Church Street to West Guardian (High Street); Terry Street; Page Street (part); Marshall Street (two sections); Guthrie Street (from Heskamp); Heskamp Street (Jamestown Street to Hayes Street); North Bramlett Street (curve to Moore Street); Colony Drive; Hurt Street (to Willis Street from Jamestown Street)

* Gas Department Audit - the Public Service Commission did find six federal violations during their August audit. Mayor Hoots assured the community that each violation has been addressed and taken care of.

* The City Police underwent an audit according to guidelines adopted by the KLCIS Insurance Program. The audit came back with a score of 82.83 which falls into the "Excellent Account".
