Get your Pressure Canner tested at the Extension Office

By Nick Roy

Many home gardens represent a family history. Seeds are saved and passed from one generation to the next. Great grandmothers recipes are saved and shared among the family and many times the pressure canners get passed from generation to generation as well. Often there's no way to know if pressure canners are working properly without being tested. Even newer canners should be tested to ensure the safety of the food being processed. Pressure canners with dial gauges should be tested yearly to check for accuracy.

If you would like to have your pressure canner tested to ensure the safety of your processed food, you may drop your pressure canner lid with dial at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground St, Columbia, KY, between Monday, July 8, 2019 and Friday, July 12, 2019. A certified individual will then test the lids and dials. Your equipment will can be ready to be picked up on the week of July 15, 2019.

Pressure canners with jiggler-style gauges instead of dial gauges aren't tested, as these gauges are supposed to maintain their accuracy. If a dial tests off by more than one or two pounds, it should be replaced.

For more information, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at (270) 384-2317.
