RIDES: EV charging stations will be able to grow in KY By Tom Waggener The state Public Service Commission's (PSC) recent ruling that electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are not utilities and therefore should not be subject to regulation is a significant win for the future of EVs and charging in the state of Kentucky. Removing the prospect of regulating an EV charging provider as a utility company frees up companies large and small to expand their services in the state and offer more options to EV users for charging on the road. As I have had conversations with potential EV buyers, probably the biggest hurdle they percieve is "where do I charge it". Given the oversaturation of options for a gas car, it's certainly understandable that a would-be EV buyer sees their fueling options like a water fountain in a desert. There already is a decent infrastructure of Charging even in Kentucky, its just not as visible as gas stations. The other benefit is that an EV user who charges at home starts each day with a full tank, which is something most ICE (internal combustion engine) drivers can't say. The PSC news release stated, "The ruling is intended to remove any ambiguity over the legal status of EV charging stations and pave the way for the deployment of more such stations in Kentucky. The PSC noted in the order that Kentucky has lagged behind neighboring states in the availability of public EV charging stations, with only 94 in the state thus far."
