Letter: Who will be responsible for inevitable injury?

Comments re photo 83983 Windows falling out of building on the square

By Victoria Pike

It certainly is a shame that we have allowed some buildings in our downtown area to get in such a sad state of repair. Many of our Downtown businesses have poured a lot of money into refurbishing their buildings, while others like the old Lermans building are literally falling apart. Windows falling to the street is not only unsightly but dangerous to all who walk our square. The owners should be ashamed.

I would hope the condemnation process speeds up before someone is seriously injured from parts falling off these buildings. My question would be, if someone is injured or even killed by falling debris, who is responsible for that injury?

Maybe this question needs to be addressed at the next city council meeting where the city attorney can answer this question.

We certainly don't want anyone seriously injured but we also need to be realistic here. Sooner or later one of those windows is going to fall when someone is walking by. I understand condemning the building is being looked into and it's a slow process.

When we have areas along roadways where rock fall frequently a sign is usually posted "Warning fallen rock zone." Maybe we need to consider posting this area as a FALLEN WINDOW ZONE until it can be addressed. Anything to bring attention to this and prompt the owner to do something or speed the condemnation process along. --Victoria
