EDA finalizes plan for road, will advertise for bids

By Linda Waggener

The regular meeting of the Columbia/Adair County EDA Board met this morning and agreed on action for the Green River Industrial Park road improvement. The Board agreed with the recommendation of Chairman Mark Dykes and he was given the go ahead to advertise for bids on the project.

In other business, the newest Board member, Bobby Morrison, asked that the group enter into a study of what surrounding counties are doing, and have done, to enable them to have thriving factories and jobs in place.

Suggestions were made to reach out to connections in Taylor County, especially John Chowning, who is credited with bringing the community together and instituting Team Taylor County at the closing of Fruit of the Loom.

It was also agreed by the group to improve our focus on presentation of the assets of Adair County - so much to offer.

Where's the gap - what does Adair need to do for jobs?

Bobby Morrison, newest Board member on the local Economic Development Authority, asked members at the May meeting to consider what's different about Adair County in relation to others around us. He noted that especially Taylor and Russell Counties seem to have been able to recruit and keep jobs where Adair seems to stay behind. He's volunteering to help.

The boy who spent his barefoot summers discovering the world of Harvey's Ridge in southern Adair County says he's done "pretty good." He grew up to travel the world, managing setup, recruitment and training of employees for 40 OshKosh plants in various countries.

He wonders if building stronger relationships with leaders in state business and industry areas will help, and volunteers time if needed. EDA Chair Mark Dykes added he believes Adair will be more ready for recruitment with the completion of the Industrial Park road planned for this summer.
