LWC Softball forces if-necessary game, beats Grand View 3-2

By Chris Wells

Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball forced the if necessary game with a 3-2 win over third-seeded Grand View (Iowa) today at the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Columbia, Ky. Bracket at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The two teams meet at 1:30pmCT with a berth to the NAIA Softball World Series on the line.

Callum Pilgrim provided a two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh to stave off elimination. Hannah Epperson and Annabelle Ramirez combined for 5-1/3 scoreless innings in relief to help the Blue Raiders improve to 49-3 on the season.

Grand View (46-11) -- who entered the double-elimination tournament without a tournament loss -- struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Lexi Merritt led off the Vikings' half inning with her fifth home run of the season. Four batters later, Kaylee Watson drove in the Vikings' second run of the inning for the 2-0 lead. Merritt and Watson combined for four of the Vikings' seven hits in the game.

Libby Yenger -- who entered the game 2-0 with a 1.70 ERA in the tournament -- quieted the Lindsey Wilson bats through the first four innings.

The Blue Raiders finally dented the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half. Samantha Luckett blasted her third home run of the tournament and 12th of the season to pull the Blue Raiders within 2-1.

The game remained there until the top of the seventh.

Makea-Al Kaluau led off the inning with a single of the middle, giving way to pinch runner Lyric Houston. Following a pop out and a fly out, pinch hitter Breanna Clark extended the game with a single up the middle, giving Pilgrim the opportunity for some heroics.

And she provided them.

Pilgrim -- the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year -- hit a 1-1 pitch off the centerfield wall, driving home Houston and Clark for the 3-2 lead.

Ramirez retired the final three Grand View batters securing her 17th win in 18 decisions this season. She did not allow a hit while striking out three in her two innings of work. Epperson provided a very important hold, allowing just three hits in 3-1/3 innings.

Yenger went the distance, allowing three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out six Blue Raiders en route to falling to 25-5 on the season.
