LWC Softball stays alive, beats Saint Xavier 4-3

By Chris Wells

Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson softball held off fourth-seeded Saint Xavier 4-3 yesterday in an elimination game at the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Columbia, KY Bracket at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (48-3) advance to face third-seeded Grand View (IA) in the championship game on Wednesday. Lindsey Wilson must beat the Vikings twice to claim the tournament title. First pitch is slated for 11amCT Wednesday at Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

Lindsey Wilson used a three-run third inning and added an all-important fourth run in the fifth inning to prevail. Hannah Epperson picked up the win in the circle and Annabelle Ramirez contributed a two-inning save to extend the Blue Raiders' season.

Up 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Callum Pilgrim legged out a triple off the left field fence and scored on a Cassie Matlock RBI ground out to give the Blue Raiders the 4-1 lead.

That run proved to be the game-winner.

Saint Xavier (32-12) scored twice in the sixth inning but left two runners stranded in the sixth and another in the seventh in the one-run game.

The Cougars opened the sixth inning with three straight singles. The latter, a Taylor Sterkowitz RBI single to left-centerfield, cut the deficit to 4-2. Following the hit, Ramirez came on in relief and recorded the first of her two strikeouts in the game.

Brittany Schultz followed with a single driving home Amanda Ruskowsky to inch the Cougars within 4-3.

Ramirez forced a pair of line outs to shortstop to get the Blue Raiders out of the jam. She pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up her second save of the season.

Lindsey Wilson seized control of the game in the third inning thanks to a pair of Saint Xavier errors.

Pilgrim singled in the inning and scored on an error that extended the inning. Jaydee Boursaw made the Cougars pay for the miscue with a two-run homer -- her 14th of the season -- to give Lindsey Wilson the 3-0 lead.

Schultz hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the fourth to climb within 3-1.

Epperson improved to 14-1 on the season, allowing a pair of earned runs on six hits while striking out five in her five innings of work. Allison Golic suffered the complete-game loss, allowing four runs -- but just one of the runs was earned -- on seven hits in her six innings in the circle.

Pilgrim and Kalli Harris led the Blue Raider offense with two hits each while Schultz finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and two RBIs.
