City Council hears ideas for downtown mural at May meeting Pops of color and a celebration of our city's history By Tiffany Kessler As growth and activity around the historic Columbia Square has increased over the past couple of years, so have ideas and the potential projects. Local artist and Adair County High School Art teacher Cayce Davenport was in attendance Monday night for the May City Council meeting. Mayor Pam Hoots has been working with Davenport on possibly creating a Columbia-themed mural. Still in the design phase, Davenport submitted sketches and took recommendations from council members. If approved, she would be hired this summer to paint a Columbia-themed logo agreed upon by the mayor and council members. The mural will be approximately an 8'x10' section of wall on the back of the square's corner building which sits next door to City Hall. It's owned by Brenda Williams and is green in color. Currently a bare green space separates the two buildings. "This is something we've really wanted to do and I'm excited about it," said Mayor Hoots. Davenport made mention of nearby cities including Jamestown and Campbellsville that have created murals and found them to be very popular. "This would be a great photo op location," she explained to the council. "It's hopefully the first of more to come because I already have ideas for other spaces in town." Council members discussed a few ideas with Davenport such as using the courthouse logo (which she had already sketched) and possibly using the town's moto "Columbia - A Great Place to Call Home". Davenport agreed to take the recommendations and create new sketches to present to the council during next month's meeting. All council members were present, including: Craig Dean, Linda Waggener, Dr. Ronald Rogers, Sharon Payne, June Parson, and Mark Harris. Regular meetings for the Columbia City Council are held the first Monday of each month at 6pmCT in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. Meetings are open to the public.
