LWC Baseball closes home season with a 9-8 comeback victory

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team closed out its home season at Egnew Park with a 9-8 comeback victory over Brescia (Ky.) on Tuesday evening.

The Blue Raiders (8-32) were outhit 12-11 by the Bearcats (12-29) but were able to produce a spark late in the game to take home the victory.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday as they close out their 2019 campaign on the road against Mid-South Conference foe Cumberlands (KY) at NoonCT.


Derek Marrufo and Manny Chavarria both led the batting efforts for Lindsey Wilson with four hits apiece. Marrufo managed four RBI's and a home run in the process while Chavarria notched two RBI's and a homer as well.

Brescia opened the game up with a two-run homer from Zach Sheid. Lindsey Wilson responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Tyler Maskill led off the Blue Raiders with a single to right-center before he would advance to scoring position from a sacrifice bunt. Seth Price reached on base via a hit by pitch.

With two on base, Marrufo connected on a single to shallow center that pushed Maskill and Price home to tie the game 2-2.

After a scoreless second, Brescia slotted home six runs on five hits in the third. With back-to-back singles to open the third, Brescia managed to load the bases to set up a grand slam from Sheid. The Bearcats managed to add another run to take their lead to eight to close out the top half of the inning.

Lindsey Wilson returned another run in the bottom of the third with Marrufo connecting for another RBI single.

The Blue Raiders would hold the Bearcats scoreless over the final six innings of the contest beginning in the top of the fourth. Chavarria knocked a solo-shot over the left-field side to give LWC life in the bottom of the fourth.

Marrufo continued to produce offense for Lindsey Wilson in the fifth. Marrufo knocked out his fourth home run of the season to minimize the Brescia lead to four. Koutsoubos followed suit with a homer of his during the first pitch of the next at-bat.

In the eighth, the Blue Raiders loaded the bases with one out but the scoring threat was erased as Brescia closed out the inning on a double play.

Seth Price was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth before Marrufo singled and Koutsoubos reaching on a hit by a pitch as well. With one out, Dalton Wells provided a single that pushed Price and Marrufo in to tie the game at eight apiece.

Jed Arend reached base on an error from the Bearcats' shortstop to load the bases. Chavarria connected for the walk-off RBI single off the left-center field fence to give the Blue Raiders the victory.

Bradley Hines went for 5-2/3 innings, allowing four hits and recording two strikeouts. Francisco Arias picked up the win, pitching in just the ninth inning. Aria recorded two strikeouts while not allowing a hit.
