Kentucky Color - Black Gold in the parking lot at Walmart By Billy Joe Fudge Last week I spied a load of Black Gold proudly parked in the Walmart parking lot. No, this is not Jed Clampett’s, “bubbling crude” variety of Black Gold but the Paul Bunyan variety, so to speak. Black Walnut is, year after year, the most valuable and prized wood in our North American Forest. It’s soft and creamy, toffee black color is very desirable for high end office and home furniture, trim, veneers, etc. For you folks with a critical eye, you are indeed seeing some, not so black lumber on this load (in accompanying photo). Sapwood on Black Walnut is a creamy beige and with the exception of woodworking craftsmen, is not desirable. A process of steaming Black Walnut prior to kiln drying was developed about 50 years ago. This steaming process actually quasi-liquifies the black color and runs it into the lighter colored sapwood, permanently staining it. This story was posted on 2019-04-20 21:41:30
