LWC Baseball drops series opener at Shawnee State

By Chris Wells

Portsmouth, OH - Lindsey Wilson baseball could not sustain its early momentum today in a 9-7 loss to host Shawnee State (Ohio) at Branch Rickey Park. Lindsey Wilson and Shawnee State will complete the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at NoonCT at Branch Rickey Park, 25 Mary Ann St, Portsmouth, OH.

The Blue Raiders (7-22, 2-8 in the Mid-South Conference) scored five times in the top of first inning, but managed just two runs over the final eight in the loss. Lindsey Wilson recorded its 11th double-digit hit game of the season, but also stranded 12 runners, including leaving a runner aboard in all but one inning in the setback.

Chris Koutsoubos hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to help Lindsey Wilson build a five-run lead. Steven Calderon produced three hits in the game to lead the Blue Raider offense while Tyler Maskill added two hits and an RBI in the game.

Dillan Saunders drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead. Maskill followed with an RBI double just in front of Koutsoubos' third home run of the season for the 5-0 advantage.

Shawnee State (12-18, 2-8) scored nine unanswered runs over the next five innings to take the 9-5 lead.

Ethan Escue suffered the loss, allowing six runs -- five of which were earned -- on eight hits over his three innings of work. Kelvin Guzman provided three innings of scoreless relief to close out the game while keeping the Blue Raiders within striking distance.

Lindsey Wilson benefitted from a Shawnee State error in the sixth inning to inch within 9-6. Manny Chavarria hit his second home run of the season in the top of ninth to cut the deficit to two, but the Blue Raiders could get no closer.
