Buildings Blooming

This article first appeared in issue 28, and was written by Linda Waggener.

Have you driven around Columbia to count the major buildings under construction? They include the new post office on Burkesville Street, the new prison behind the Nazarene Church, the new Adanta building on the old grade school hill, and the new CofC building downtown.

What's HoA doing?

A question comes from a California Adair County native about what Heart of Adair had been doing lately. That's a very good question; frequently Heart of Adair hibernates in the winter. Then we plan to go into spring break. Actually, between that and summer vacation, the group rarely meets. But things seem to have a way of getting done "when the time is right."

To update some of the things members have, and are, doing:

Heart of Adair ***

***took a stand for the revitalization of downtown, sought ideas, recruited action groups who asked questions and planted ideas and flowers. Today businesses, organizations and caring individuals continue to make downtown Columbia an economically vibrant and beautiful place...

***held a town meeting to explore questions about a proposed bypass. Results of the open communications session showed that everyone who ever has to drive into town from Campbellsville is frustrated and strongly in favor of a bypass. When the location details are finalized it will come to pass (no pun intended)...

***took a stand against the building of a prison next door to individual's homes and the Nazarene Church in Columbia. The majority ruled, however, which felt that if the location were to be questioned we'd lose badly needed jobs. For better or worse, the juvenile prison is under construction now and several people are driving to Louisville to train for jobs as we print...

***is presently at work supporting efforts of the Adair County Arts Council as noted on the front page...

***is seeking to gather a group of ten or more people who share an interest in starting a community investment group under the guidance of Page Beard Horstmyer, a representative of Morgan-Keegan. Anyone desiring more information, or who is interested in participating, may call this writer, Linda Waggener, 384-3603.

Heart of Adair is a network of interested persons who meet as needed to ask questions about the health and future of our place and its people, and to speak out in favor of improvements we believe will be good for many generations to come.

Ideas and questions may be shared by writing to Heart of Adair, P.O. Box 906, Columbia, Ky. 42728, or by calling 384-6400.
