LWC Baseball uses dramatics to sweep Roosevelt By Chris Wells Lindsey Wilson baseball picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the season today with a pair of wins over visiting Roosevelt (Ill.) at Egnew Park. The Blue Raiders (3-11) needed come-from-behind efforts to win both games today, including battling back from a 12-run deficit in today's opener. Austin Rayno finished the two games with five hits while Steven Calderon ripped a pair of home runs and drove home nine runs in the wins. GAME 1: Lindsey Wilson 13 Roosevelt 12 Lindsey Wilson scored 13 unanswered runs over the final five innings of an extra-inning first game to beat the Lakers (0-10) 13-12. After falling behind 12-0, Lindsey Wilson scored three runs in the fifth, four in sixth and five in the seventh to tie the game at 12-12 and send the scheduled seven-inning game into extras. Rayno scored from second base on a fielder's choice to second base to provide the game-winner. Rayno left at the crack of the bat and never slowed down on the ground ball and just slid under the tag to cap the dramatic comeback. Derek Marrufo started the comeback with a two-run homer in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 12-3. Tyler Maskill provided a two-run triple in the sixth to highlight a four-run sixth inning to trim the Roosevelt led to 12-7. The Blue Raiders benefited from four seventh-inning walks that ultimately set up a Calderon grand slam to tie the game at 12-12. Calderon finished 1-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs. Rayno had three hits while Jordan Gardner finished with two hits and three runs. Maskill ended with three RBIs. Francisco Arias picked up the win, throwing a scoreless ninth inning -- including a pair of strikeouts with the potential go-ahead run standing on second base. CJ Lent provided three scoreless innings during the Lindsey Wilson comeback. He did not surrender a hit while striking out four for his longest outing of the season. GAME 2: Lindsey Wilson 8 Roosevelt 5 The Blue Raiders used their comeback theme in the second game to complete their first doubleheader sweep of the season with an 8-5 win. Lindsey Wilson scored in five straight innings to overcome an early 4-1 deficit. Price provided a pair of RBIs in the second and fourth innings to pull the Blue Raiders within 4-3. Sandwiched in between, Calderon plated Rayno -- who scored four times in the two games -- in the third inning. While Lindsey Wilson was mounting its comeback, Vincent Boils provided outstanding relief -- shutting down the Lakers. Boils -- who picked up his first Lindsey Wilson win of his career -- threw 3-1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. With two outs in the fifth, Lindsey Wilson grabbed its first lead of the game. Marrufo doubled down the left field line to start the rally. Dillan Saunders followed with an RBI double and later scored on an RBI single by Price -- his third RBI of the game. Price finished 2-for-2 with the three RBIs. The Blue Raiders added insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Rayno reached on a one-out double, followed by a Gardner walk. Calderon hammered his second homer of the day -- this one a 3-run shot -- to give Lindsey Wilson an 8-4 lead. Calderon finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs. Roosevelt threatened in the top of the seventh -- loading the bases with one out. After an error and a pair of walks, Arias settled down and closed the door with a ground out and pop out to secure the 8-5 win. Lindsey Wilson returns to action at Noon CT on Monday against Talladega (Ala.) in a doubleheader at Egnew Park. This story was posted on 2019-03-10 20:02:29
