LWC Baseball to play Roosevelt and Talladega

The Lindsey Wilson Baseball team is set to take on Roosevelt (IL) in a doubleheader beginning at 1pmCT Sunday and then face (RV) Talladega on Monday in a doubleheader starting at Noon CT at Egnew Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

The Blue Raiders (1-11) were able to split a two-game series with Cleary (MI) last Saturday, claiming their first win of the season. The Blue Raiders closed out game one with a victory after going 10 innings, ultimately winning the game 8-7. As for the second game, Cleary took an early 1-0 lead and was able to keep LWC scoreless to finish the game with the one run advantage.


Steven Calderon leads LWC with 13 hits, batting for .302 so far this season. Calderon also leads the team with eight RBI's, five doubles, and two home runs. Dalton Wells and Tyler Maskill have both recorded two stolen bases.

Kelvin Guzman leads Lindsey Wilson from the mound, pitching 20.2 innings this season with a 5.66 ERA. Guzman has started in four games and has struck out 18 batters while giving up 14 runs and 19 hits.

Roosevelt visits Columbia, Kentucky after opening the season 0-8. RU returns to play after losing a two-game series to Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday. The Lakers lost game one 4-1 and fell 11-1 during game two.

Matt Marrera leads the Lakers with six hits while hitting for a .300 batting average. Marrera has also connected for three RBI's. Dom Lentini leads the team in RBI's with a total of five. Four Roosevelt student-athletes have been able to connect on five or more hits so far this season.

Matt Garbacz leads the team from the mound with a 7.71 ERA. Garbacz has struck out nine batters, averaging 6.94 strikeouts per game. Garbacz has given up 16 hits and 10 runs in 11.2 innings pitched.

The Blue Raiders and the Lakers have met only four times prior to Sunday's doubleheader. Lindsey Wilson holds a 3-1 record against Roosevelt. The Lakers claimed a victory in the last meeting back on March 10, 2018, where they defeated the Blue Raiders 9-7 in game one of a doubleheader series at Egnew Park. LWC was able to grab hold of game two winning 8-7.

Talladega returns to play after splitting a doubleheader against Point (Ga.) at home on Tuesday. The Tornadoes were able to take game one 3-2 before falling 7-6 in game two.

Emmanuel Amparo leads the Tornadoes with 13 hits while hitting for a .333 batting average. Amparo has tallied five RBI's as well as three doubles. Three student-athletes lead the team with eight RBI's each.

Daniel Catillo leads the team from the mound with a 5.01 ERA. Castillo has pitched for 23.1 innings, giving up 25 hits and 17 runs. Castillo has started three times for Talladega, picking up three wins. He has also struck out 20 batters, averaging 7.71 strikeouts per game.

Talladega has stolen 17 bases on 28 attempts with Alexis Ventura going 3-for-4 on stolen base attempts.

Monday's matchup is just the second meeting between the two programs. Talladega holds a 1-0 record against LWC, beating the Blue Raiders 5-3 back on Feb. 20, 2016, at a neutral site.
