RIDES: getting an electric 'fill up' becoming easier every day

By Tom Waggener

On the questions received since the first article about my electric car adventure was, "...where to plug in an electric vehicle in Columbia?" As of now, the closest "public" station I know of is at the KOA in Campbellsville. I use a phone app called Plugshare to locate public charging stations and, since it's crowd sourced information, a lot of actual public stations are yet to be posted.

When in Columbia, I've used a family friend's RV exterior outlet to get a charge that replenished roughly 30 miles of range per hour.

While my Dad was in TJ Samson Hospital, I found a public charging station in the back parking lot and was allowed to use it. I expect there are more undiscovered stations around and many more will pop up in the future.

Most EVs have an adapter to plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet which is the same outlet RVs use, and many modern dryers as well. Theoretically, any campsite with RV plug in would have charging capabilities.

You can also charge off of a standard 110 outlet but the rate of charge is really slow.

Installing a home charging set up is fairly easy and inexpensive. Most people go with the NEMA 14-50 outlet which would cost around $300 dollars parts and labor by a master electrician. I went with the Tesla dedicated High power wall charger.

The biggest hesitation I see when it comes to EV adoption is "Where can I charge and what happens if I run out of charge?"

The best place to charge is at home. I park my car in the carport and plug in the charger and I have an app set to begin the charge late at night so as not to waste electricity. I wake up every day with a full tank, so to speak, about 230 miles of range on a 90% charge.

For long trips, my onboard navigation system knows where public charging stations are and plans the route accordingly. For Tesla owners there are supercharges in Louisville, Bowling green, Nashville, Lexington, Cincinatti and many more set to open soon. A supercharger can charge at a rate of up to 300 miles of range per hour, so topping off takes 20-45 minutes depending on how depleted you are.

Depending on your daily travel needs, most EVs will cover your daily use with a home charge. I bought the Tesla because I drive around 34,000 miles a year as a realtor and average 120 miles a day. I have driven once to St. Louis and several times to Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Columbia with no fears on range.
