Commentary: The United Methodist Decision Commentary by Pastor Jason Roop Asbury United Methodist Church Asbury UMC is releasing the following statement regarding the recent General Conference vote surrounding the definition of Biblical marriage and ordination of LGBTQ clergy. The United Methodist Church affirmed its stance on Christian marriage as consisting of one man and one woman. The United Methodist Church made a bold declaration over the past few days to take a stand for Biblical Christianity. No one saw this coming. However, with God all things are possible, and He often shows up when the odds are against His people. A special thanks also goes out to the conservatives who did not leave the church during the attack on Scriptural integrity. This serves as a lesson to all of us. God planted a garden in the presence of a snake, and told Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. If God has planted you in a dark place, He may be wanting to bring reform through you. Lastly, this is not a vote against any certain people groups. This is about historic Christianity and accurate interpretation of Scripture. If you are struggling with any sin, whether it's lifestyle of open rebellion, or the silent sins that lurk in the darkness, there is forgiveness and freedom available for you. Jesus said, 'Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' (Matthew 11:28) There is a place for you at the foot of the Cross. Jesus still saves sinners, and sets us free. Thank God for grace, thank God for His Word, and thank God for His life-giving Spirit which is at work in the hearts and minds of His Church today. We welcome all people to worship with us at Asbury, no matter where you come from, or what you struggle with. We believe that your sin does not define you, and Christ offers forgiveness and a new life to all who turn to Him and believe. Our mission is to be a church for those seeking refuge, and a harbor for those needing Hope. We believe God's Spirit working through His Word has the power to transform lives. If you are looking for a home church, we will gladly welcome you as we journey on this path of spiritual growth together. Jesus loves you very, very much.
