LWC Wrestling falls to Cumberlands 26-14 on senior night

The No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team fell to No. 5 Cumberlands (Ky.) 26-14 on senior night at Biggers Sports Center.

Lindsey Wilson (5-2 MSC) fell in the first two matches of the night to spot Cumberlands (7-0 MSC) an early 9-0 advantage. Trent Johnson (No. 6 at 141) was able to battle his way to an 8-2 lead over Chasen Brown entering the final period as he managed to take the bout via an 11-5 decision.


The Patriots would then pick up win back-to-back victories to increase their lead to 17-3 but LWC manage two major decisions and a decision victory to trail by just three with two matches remaining.

Derrick Smallwood (No. 6 at 157) gave Lindsey Wilson momentum when he won over Brady Emerson 15-4. Smallwood recorded three takedowns across the first two frames to lead 6-2 entering the final period. After starting on bottom, a reversal 35 seconds into the last stanza increase his lead to 8-3 before dominating his way to a major decision victory.

Brett Bradford (No. 8 at 174) battled his way to a 7-5 lead over Jared Swank through two periods before riding out the entire third to claim an 8-5 decision win. The victory cut the Patriots lead to 17-10 with three bouts remaining.

Lucas Miozza (No. 20 at 184) was able to score a late takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead before his advantage was cut in half at 2-1 after the second. Miozza quickly escaped after starting the final period on bottom to double his advantage. He scored a near fall with 25 seconds left in the match to win on a 10-2 major decision.

Cumberlands would put the match out of reach at 23-14 during the 197-pound bout after the Blue Raiders were pinned. The Patriots would take the match by a final score of 26-14 after winning the heavyweight bout on a 3-0 decision.

The Blue Raiders take to the mats again in Newberry, South Carolina on Saturday when they compete at the Newberry Open.
